Account Manager
Owns the customers you already have: adoption, renewal, expansion, and the early warning before one leaves.
Who to hire
The shape of person who does this job well — and whether you should be hiring it at all yet.
Pebl is hiring four of these at once across the US, Australia and Europe — which is what a working account function looks like once there is a book of business to keep. Hire the first one when the founder is spending more time keeping customers than finding them. Look for someone who has carried a renewal number, not only a satisfaction score.
Education
No degree requirement. Business or communications backgrounds are common; the skill is noticing that a customer has gone quiet and acting before the renewal date.
Experience
2–5 years in a customer-facing commercial role. Having owned a quota — even a small renewal quota — is the dividing line between account management and support.
Vertical / domain experience
Matters when the customer's own work is technical enough that credibility must be earned: clinics, contractors, finance teams. In those markets, hiring someone from the customer's industry rather than from software is often the better trade.
What it pays, roughly
$65,520 median, Canada — for Retail salespersons and non-technical wholesale trade sales and account representatives, the closest occupation Statistics Canada actually measures, measured from $36,005 to $65,520 over 596,285 people. That occupation is broader than this role, so read it as an anchor, not a salary band — and note that a startup usually pays below it in cash and above it in equity.
Credentials and certifications
What exists, who issues it, and whether it means anything for this seat. A credential is evidence of a floor, never of judgment — and in a few of these roles it is a legal requirement rather than a nice-to-have.
| Credential | Issued by | When it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Vendor certifications on your own stack (CRM, support, billing) | Your software vendors | Cheap, verifiable and useful; no general account-management licence exists. |
What this role does at each stage
The same title means three different jobs depending on how much money is in the bank. Read the stage you are at, then read the next one — that is what you are hiring toward.
The founder. Every customer is a research subject and the churn reason is the product roadmap.
First hire, usually a generalist who also does onboarding and support. Give them the renewal number and the authority to fix small problems without asking.
A team, segmented by account size, with a defined handover from sales and a health score that someone actually looks at.
Can one person hold this and something else?
The whole point of the many-hats problem: which of these jobs merge safely into one person, and which merges quietly cost you money or control.
Merges well with
- Experience Specialist (Operations)
- Manager, Onboarding (Operations)
- Marketing Manager
Account management merges naturally with onboarding and support in a company under about 30 customers — the same person who set the account up is the one it trusts. Split when onboarding becomes a project with its own schedule.
Keep separate from
Avoid merging new-business selling with account management long term: hunting and keeping reward different temperaments, and the urgent new deal always beats the quiet renewal.
