Crew Supervisor / Foreperson

Runs the crew on site: the sequence, the safety, the quality and whether the job finishes in the hours it was sold for.

Field & trade also called Foreman, Site Supervisor, Crew Lead · hiring order: roughly #10 of 33

Who to hire

The shape of person who does this job well — and whether you should be hiring it at all yet.

Needed from the point where two crews run at once, because that is the point the owner can no longer be on both sites. In safety-regulated work, a competent supervisor is a legal requirement rather than a management preference.

Education

Trade certification plus supervisory training. Most provinces' OHS regimes require a supervisor to be competent — knowledgeable about the work, the hazards and the regulation — and that is a defined term, not a compliment.

Experience

Journeyperson plus three to five years, including running a crew through something that went wrong. Ask about an injury or a near-miss on their site and what changed afterward.

Vertical / domain experience

Domain plus site type: residential retrofit, occupied commercial and industrial shutdown work demand genuinely different supervision, and the one that catches people out is working in an occupied building.

What it pays, roughly

$94,016 median, Canada — for Managers in construction and facility operation and maintenance, the closest occupation Statistics Canada actually measures, measured from $46,800 to $101,338 over 214,735 people. That occupation is broader than this role, so read it as an anchor, not a salary band — and note that a startup usually pays below it in cash and above it in equity.

Credentials and certifications

What exists, who issues it, and whether it means anything for this seat. A credential is evidence of a floor, never of judgment — and in a few of these roles it is a legal requirement rather than a nice-to-have.

Red Seal endorsement in the trade Canadian Council of Directors of Apprenticeship Interprovincial certification — the journeyperson standard, and what lets a certificate travel between provinces.
Supervisor OHS training Provincial OHS regulator or an approved provider Several provinces mandate supervisor-specific training; where it is not mandated it is still the first thing an inspector asks about after an incident.
First aid at the level the site requires Provincial OHS regulator / St John Ambulance, Red Cross The required level depends on crew size and distance from medical aid — check the regulation rather than guessing.
Gold Seal Certified (Superintendent) Canadian Construction Association Carries weight on larger commercial and public projects.

What this role does at each stage

The same title means three different jobs depending on how much money is in the bank. Read the stage you are at, then read the next one — that is what you are hiring toward.

1Pre-seed
you, a laptop and an idea

The owner is the supervisor, and the legal duties of a supervisor attach to them personally. Read what those duties are in your province before the first employee starts.

2Seed
first money, first hires

The best technician becomes a working foreperson — half on the tools, half running the crew. Say out loud which half wins when they conflict, or the tools always win.

3Series A
a real org chart

Supervisors who are not on the tools, with a daily report, a toolbox-talk record and the authority to stop work.

4

Can one person hold this and something else?

The whole point of the many-hats problem: which of these jobs merge safely into one person, and which merges quietly cost you money or control.

Merges well with

Working foreperson is the normal small-business arrangement. The merge that matters is supervisor plus training owner: the person who corrects the work is the right person to run the toolbox talks.

Keep separate from

Do not merge supervision with payroll approval for the same crew — approving your own crew's hours removes the only check on them.

5

Reading a candidate

What good looks like in an hour, and what should stop the process.

Good signals

  • Can describe their last stop-work decision
  • Runs a real toolbox talk, not a signature sheet
  • Knows each crew member's ticket status and expiry

Red flags

  • Treats safety paperwork as the safety programme
  • Will not correct a friend on the crew
  • No daily record of what happened on site
