Chief Marketing Officer
Owns positioning, demand and the words the market repeats back to you — including the ones investors use in a partner meeting.
Who to hire
The shape of person who does this job well — and whether you should be hiring it at all yet.
A full-time CMO before product-market fit is the most reliably wasted senior hire in startups. Buy the positioning work fractionally — a few weeks to establish who the product is for, what it replaces and what it costs — then hire a doer who executes it. Hire full time when there is a repeatable channel to scale and a team to run.
Education
Marketing or communications degrees are common; the discipline is learned in market. For technical products, the ability to understand the product deeply outranks any marketing credential.
Experience
8+ years with at least one company taken from unknown to known in the same motion as yours. Motion is the thing to match: product-led self-serve, SMB sales-assisted, and enterprise field marketing share a title and almost no skills.
Vertical / domain experience
Matters where the audience is a profession with its own language — clinicians, lawyers, engineers, tradespeople. A CMO who cannot speak the buyer's language will produce marketing the buyer distrusts. In broad consumer or SMB markets, channel experience beats domain.
What it pays, roughly
$103,459 median, Canada — for Managers in communication (except broadcasting), the closest occupation Statistics Canada actually measures over 10,190 people. That occupation is broader than this role, so read it as an anchor, not a salary band — and note that a startup usually pays below it in cash and above it in equity.
Credentials and certifications
What exists, who issues it, and whether it means anything for this seat. A credential is evidence of a floor, never of judgment — and in a few of these roles it is a legal requirement rather than a nice-to-have.
| Credential | Issued by | When it matters |
|---|---|---|
| CIM qualifications (Certificate to Chartered Marketer) | Chartered Institute of Marketing (UK) | The one widely recognised academic-style marketing credential; common in the UK, rare in North America. |
| Google Ads and Analytics certifications | Google Skillshop | Table stakes for a performance marketer, meaningless for a CMO. |
| Pragmatic Institute product-marketing certifications | Pragmatic Institute | A shared vocabulary for positioning and launch work; valued in B2B product marketing. |
What this role does at each stage
The same title means three different jobs depending on how much money is in the bank. Read the stage you are at, then read the next one — that is what you are hiring toward.
The founder. Talking to buyers is not delegable before you know who they are, and the first hundred conversations are the research.
Fractional for positioning and the website, plus one hands-on hire for execution. The deliverable is a sentence about who this is for that the sales conversation can survive.
A real leader owning a budget, a funnel with measured stages and two or three channels. Now accountable for pipeline, not for impressions.
Can one person hold this and something else?
The whole point of the many-hats problem: which of these jobs merge safely into one person, and which merges quietly cost you money or control.
Merges well with
- Chief Executive Officer
- Marketing Manager (Marketing & go-to-market)
- Head of Worldwide Partnerships (Marketing & go-to-market)
CEO + CMO is the standard early merge. CMO + head of partnerships works where the channel is other companies rather than advertising. Avoid merging CMO and sales leadership for long — one optimises for the next quarter and the other for the next year, and the short horizon always wins the argument.
Keep separate from
Marketing and go-to-market look like one job and are two. The CMO owns what the company says and what it stands for — outward to the market and inward to the staff who have to repeat it — on a horizon measured in recognition. The GTM lead owns the motion: which partners, which channels, which conversations, measured this quarter. Merged, the quarter wins and the position never gets built. Keep them separate once both carry a budget, and make them agree one definition of a qualified lead between them.
Reading a candidate
What good looks like in an hour, and what should stop the process.
Good signals
- Asks who you lose deals to and why, in week one
- Writes; shows you the drafts
- Can name the two channels they would not use for your business
Red flags
- Brand refresh as the first proposal
- Reports reach and sentiment instead of pipeline
- Has only operated with a large budget and an agency
