Head of Worldwide Partnerships

Builds the routes to market you do not own: resellers, platforms, referral networks and the integrations that put you inside someone else's product.

Marketing & go-to-market also called Head of Channel, VP Business Development, Alliances Lead · hiring order: roughly #12 of 33
1

Who to hire

The shape of person who does this job well — and whether you should be hiring it at all yet.

A senior, expensive hire that only pays off when there is something to partner about — a product partners can sell and a customer base they want. Before that it produces signed memoranda and no revenue. Hire when direct sales works and the constraint is reach.

Education

No requirement. Commercial or legal literacy matters because the job is contracts as much as relationships.

Experience

8+ years in partnerships or enterprise sales, with at least one partnership they can point to that produced measurable revenue. Ask for the number; most partnership stories do not have one.

Vertical / domain experience

Heavily domain-dependent: partnerships run on who the person already knows and which platforms they have worked with. A payments-partnerships leader is not interchangeable with a healthcare-channel one.

What it pays, roughly

$125,008 median, Canada — for Corporate sales managers, the closest occupation Statistics Canada actually measures over 74,755 people. That occupation is broader than this role, so read it as an anchor, not a salary band — and note that a startup usually pays below it in cash and above it in equity.

Credentials and certifications

What exists, who issues it, and whether it means anything for this seat. A credential is evidence of a floor, never of judgment — and in a few of these roles it is a legal requirement rather than a nice-to-have.

What this role does at each stage

The same title means three different jobs depending on how much money is in the bank. Read the stage you are at, then read the next one — that is what you are hiring toward.

1Pre-seed
you, a laptop and an idea

Not a role. The founder takes the one or two partnerships that are actually distribution and ignores the rest.

2Seed
first money, first hires

Still the founder or the first GTM hire, part time. Prove one partner can produce revenue before building a programme.

3Series A
a real org chart

A real seat with a revenue number, a partner agreement template, and a decision about margin share that finance has signed off.

4

Can one person hold this and something else?

The whole point of the many-hats problem: which of these jobs merge safely into one person, and which merges quietly cost you money or control.

Merges well with

At seed this is the CEO's job and should stay there: partners want to talk to a principal. Where the partnership is technical (an integration), pairing with product is more useful than pairing with sales.

Keep separate from

Partner-sourced customers still need an owner, and a partnerships lead will always prioritise the next agreement over the existing account.

5

Reading a candidate

What good looks like in an hour, and what should stop the process.

Good signals

  • Brings a partnership that produced a stated revenue number
  • Asks about margin and support obligations early
  • Has killed a partnership that was not working

Red flags

  • Measures success in logos on a slide
  • No view on who supports the end customer
  • Needs a year before any revenue is attributable
